What are Orthotics?

An orthotic is simply a device, which compensates for lack of function in any part of the body for example spectacles, false teeth and hearing aids are orthotic devices and these respectively of course improve vision, eating and hearing.

In a similar way a foot orthotic will compensate for lack of correct foot function, it re-times the motion of the foot to allow it to work in harmony with the rest of the human structure, therefore alleviating associated conditions, i.e. heel, knee, and back pain. As we are all individuals and our requirements are unique, as with spectacles, false teeth and hearing aids which are prescribed for a persons particular needs, so must a foot orthotic be prescribed for the individual foot. After all, you wouldn’t buy a set of false teeth off the shelf in a department store.
